Most child care facilities are registered with the Better Business Bureau, so checking with them is also a good idea. Although the Better Business Bureau may say the facility is good and has had no problems reported, there are still other things that should be looked into.
Is the center age appropriate for your child?
The center should have games and toys that are designed for your child's age group. Toys that will teach your child are an important factor. A child care center should have building toys, books, crayons, etc.
What type of activities does the center offer?
It is important that your child be involved in both free play and organized activites. Free play will allow your child time to do his own thing and interact with other children in the facility. Organized activities will help teach your child, such as music and singing, art, puzzles etc. You also want to make sure that there is time for excericise or outdoor play.
How are disciplinary actions handled?
If another child should bite of hit your child, how does the facility handle this? Should your child cause a problem, how will he/she be dealt with? Most facilities use the time out method, but some may also have otehr methods of dealing with disciplinary actions.
How is meal and snack time handled?
Look for an are where children eat. The facility should have small tables either in the classroom or in another room where the children go for these times. Take into consideration also, what type of snacks the center provides. Most centers will provide snacks such as fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Nutrition is very important for a child.
Who is the person who will be in charge of your child (i.e a teacher, an aid, etc.)?
The most important factor to look into is the person who will be with your child during the time he/she is in the facility. This person must be friendly and eager to work with children, someone who is warm and caring.
