One of the greatest battles around any parent’s home is the age old messy room problem. Your child has too many better things to do than to keep his room tidy and clean and if he put his laundry in the basket you would probably faint from surprise. It’s important to teach children to keep a clean room, not only for your sanity, but for their future and the future success of their marriages! It doesn’t need to take a lot of nagging to get a child to keep his room clean, often all it takes is a solution. To a child, a messy room looks like an insurmountable obstacle that he can never hope to achieve on his own. If you give your child the tools to be neat, he will be able to keep a clean room without a lot of fuss.

Make sure your child has a laundry hamper in his room and get him into the habit of putting the dirty clothes into it as soon as they leave his body. Make sure toys and books don’t get stacked on top of the hamper as this will add the trouble of moving things and the clothes will go on the floor. If your child doesn’t have to travel with his clothes from one room to the next, it will be easier for him to put the clothes where they belong. You can even leave the hamper open so that all he has to do is make a 2 point basket to take care of his clothes.

To keep toys under control, be sure your child has plenty of storage. Separate the toys into different containers according to type. All the Leggos can go in one box, all the cars in another, all the Barbie clothes in still another. When children have boxes for specific things, it is easier for them to put things away, they don’t have to find a place to keep something, they can just put the thing in its box with other like things.

Make sure your child has enough places to store his belongings and be sure they are easily accessible. If you can teach your child to make his bed as soon as he wakes up then you’ve got it made!
